Another Day, Another Dollar...

I actually did find a dollar on the street the other day. It was pretty neat.

Anyway, it's been a somewhat less busy week, but the I've been pretty solidly doing stuff, from drill practice, to final bits of homework, to preparations for studying for finals. My studying will kick into full swing after class ends tomorrow and I get to the weekend...

But before that, I want to express the celebratory cheer!

SNOW!

At least a light dusting. It finally makes winter seem worthwhile. Well, kinda. Sunday night, we got a very decent amount of snow, and it seemed everybody on campus went out around midnight for snowball fights like the world has ever seen. It was absolutely perfect packing snow, and people took advantage of it. Dorms had wars against each other... (think 400 people in two battle lines charging at each other with war cries) people built statues (including one epic monument to male anatomy that I took great joy in leveling with a shoulder charge) and such. I heard at South Quad and West Quad, some of the football players were out there in the midst of it. Weird to think of, because normally you think of those guys as approaching celebrity level.

Unfortunately, after that great night, all the snow melted and we received the joy of 50 mph wind gusts of icy chill that cut through clothing like it was mist on a sunny day. Metaphorically speaking.

Enough of the weather... tomorrow, I get to go home! For... a few hours. I'm gonna head home about 330-4ish hang out for a while and see the family, then head over and watch the high school's play, "Scrooge." After that, I'll go to bed late, get a minimal amount of sleep, leave home at ridiculously early hours and get to Ann Arbor in time for Drill Team Practice, then Parade Practice, and then the End of the Year parade itself.

Then there's the Markley Ball, which is like informal, semi-formal, wear something mildly nice end of the year thing for our dorm. At least, that's what I got out of the ads. That's Saturday night, and then Sunday... I think just studying, although I could be forgetting something. I forgot to write down my schedule this week.

Anyway, have a good Christmas preparation! Hopefully I'll see some of you soon.

Finals Week...

DUN DUN DUN...

Hey, so sorry I haven't posted in a bit. It's been a bit busy the last few days... aside from the extreme amounts of laziness I've partaken in. You see, I'm kind of in a bubble where there isn't a whole lot of new homework, but it feels to early to study. Thus, I accomplished very little studying-wise over the weekend. That wasn't entirely my fault though... Saturday and Sunday were both INCREDIBLY busy for me.

First, though I suppose I should mention my Chemistry exam that I took last Wednesday. I managed to pull out an awe-inspiring class average once again. It's weird because I thought I was going to ace this test, up until I actually took it. Strange how that works, isn't it? Ah well, as long as I can keep myself in the upper 50% of the class, I'll be happy at this point. To tell the total truth, I absolutely DESPISE chemistry. Luckily for me, I'm done with it after this semester. Woohoo!

And now back to the weekend. This Saturday was the final blimp competition for my Engin 100 class, and I ended up being there from 1230 to about 4. We did pretty well in the end, pulling third place in the time trials overall. That was pretty awesome, in retrospect, because our blimp was an absolutely massive piece of material.

We lost to one much more aerodynamic blimp, and one that the professor was surprised worked nearly as well as it did. Ah well, it was fun, and brought back memories of robotics. Plus, I think we got a pretty good grade on it.

Then, Sunday was drill team initiations, along with the usual drill team practice and flight meetings. The initiation basically ended up being very reminiscent of what we call a 'gatekeeper,' where we have to hold our bearing while getting asked various questions from our 'Warrior Knowledge' packet such as chain of command, Code of Conduct, ranks of the various branches... and so on. After that, we were split into three groups under potential drill team commanders for next semester, made a quick routine, and went outside into the cold to perform it and march around for a bit. After a brush with frostbite, we came back inside and got our cool hats and gloves that we're going to use for the Parade. (Note, not an actual parade, just one inside a building for ROTC.)

Speaking of that, this Saturday consists of the end of ROTC for this semester (as well as the end of my classes!) and from 10-11 am we're having a 'parade' where we'll essentially give out awards, show off some drill stuff, and have a performance from the Rifle team (ahem... me.) Parents and family are invited... *hint hint* and afterwards we have our End of Term party. Pizza. Booya.

That's all I've got for now... I've got to settle down to a bit of studying. Only one week left after all!

Hasta Lavista. N' stuff.

Blargalarg.

Had a killer migraine today. The proper metaphor describing it is "A pair of railroad spikes being driven through my eyebrows, connected to an eggbeater linked directly to my stomach."

Needless to say it didn't end well. THAT was beneficial to studying.

Other than that, had a good Thanksgiving. Dinner was great, and though I wasn't the most... sociable person throughout those two days, I relaxed more than I have in months. It was really nice, and the girls antic's were silly as always.

Two weeks till school get outs, and another week for exams. Wow.

Wow.

Thanksgiving...

Oh how awesome it is. After my Calc Exam yesterday, I have been more relaxed than I have been in weeks. Especially when I found out today I got a full letter grade better on this one than my previous one. Oh, and the class average was a 40. I got a 52. Go figure.

Anyway, arrived in Ohio about an hour or so ago... was a nice trip, until my laptop died. My poor Civilization game... Oh well, I caught up on my reading quite a bit. Was nice.

Anyway I'll be chilling here with family for the next couple of days, relaxing... and, oh wait, studying for my Chem exam a few days after break ends. Yay me.

But enough of that. Turkey Day Tomorrow! Football and Food!

Quick Note:

Wanted to make my email simpler, so I downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird today. It's like Microsoft Outlook in that it allows you to access your e-mail from your desktop. Since I'm using two e-mail addresses, I thought it would be nice to get them together in one place.

However, since yahoo wants to make me pay for the forwarding feature I've switched to gmail. So, if you have any personal emails telling me how awesome I am, in the future switch to this email account for any messages.

Thanks!

It's been a long, long time...

Hey everybody! It's been, what, two weeks since my last post? Yeah, sorry about that. I've been alternating between overstressed, tired, and procastination and I've been a bit distracted... so, the last two weeks.

I finished CC (Commander's Cup) football for the Air Force, with a grand total of... 0 wins! Hooray! We lost to the Army 18-13 and the Navy 38-10. What was weird, though was in each game we got dominated the first half, then in the second half the opposing team didn't score a point. For example, in the Navy game it was 38-4 at halftime. The first half had 4 safeties (2 on each side) and about 10 interceptions (all on us.) Not even joking about the number. We were THAT bad at passing.

I myself somehow ended up as an alternate Wide Receiver and a starting Defensive end. That was fun. I need to go thank Coach Bisel for the springing off the ball and the staying low and quick practice. I really do. I did surprisingly well for not ever having played a line position, ever.

Other than that, it's been pretty boring. Lots of studying and homework, alternated by bouts of doing absolutely nothing. Can't seem to keep up a steady pace in the motivation department, homework-wise. The only thing that I'm constantly motivated to excel in is ROTC, and I 'praise tha Lawd!' every day for that. It keeps me sane, it really does.

Math has been a serious pain, as it went from extremely easy to... a sever lack of understanding. There is no longer any real set of steps to take to solve problems, now it's all interpreting data and making my own formulas... THEN solving them, and it's all word problems and.. yeah. It's difficult. But, I'm studying, and I'm confident that I can get it by exam time next week.

That and I seem to have lost control of Chemistry have left me feeling pretty down about that class. However, I have a few weeks to catch up on it and I'll be doing some hardcore studying and office hour visiting to catch back up to reality here.

So all in all, it's been tough but I think I can handle it. I've learned some important lessons for next semester, and I'm going to have a lot more organized notes/homework/time management next time around.

Speaking of next semester, I've backpacked my classes. That basically means I've chosen when I want them, though I haven't registered yet.

So, the plan is to take Calc 2, Enginerring 101 (Programming), Physics, Air Force History (I think... Air Force something.), and a Philosophy Seminar called "Science Fiction and Philosphy." I'm looking forward to that a lot, as it combines to of my favorite hobbies. Reading, and thinking about stuff. It's gonna be sweet.

So anyway, this weekend I've had several plan changes... TOmorrow (Friday) I might be doing Color Guard at a Basketball game, or I might be going to a comedy/music things with my friends from Aquinas who will be arriving tomorrow night. Saturday I'll be going to the football game, doing program sales, or the unreliable people who are assigned on Color Guard might not show and I could potentially do that. I'm hoping someone is unreliable, to be honest. The Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy will be there. That's THE enlistedman of the Navy. The guy with like 50+ years in service. The guy who probably is smarter than half the officers in the Navy, or at least experienced enough to be able to tell even a Captain what to do. I'll be kinda depressed if I don't at least get to see him.

Two things I'm NOT doing this weekend because of various other stuff are going out Paintballing and having a Flight Orientation. Too many things to do... so little time. *sigh*

Anyways, that's my life! Happy Journaling to you! Bye for now.

Busy Weekend Ahead!

Y'arr, raise the sails! Get to the oars! Put on the dramatic music! Thar be a storm ahead!

Actually, I just have a bunch of stuff planned for this weekend. Tomorrow, I managed to get on the color guard again so will be on the field again for the game against Purdue (this time I'm one of the linesmen!), after that, on Sunday I have Drill practice for marching, Drill practice for spinning rifles, football practice and a game against the Army ROTC...

And, a potential flight orientation. Though the chances of that are looking much slimmer for this weekend.

Oh, and let's not forget studying for my Chem Lab exam.

God, I love college.

And for my random moment of the day... in my Chemistry lecture we recently started talking about orbitals. Basically they explain how electrons around the nucles of an atom work, such as where they are, how they rotate... that kind of thing. One of the rules we learned was the Pauli Exclusion principle. That says that if an electron has a whole bunch of energy levels to fill up with electrons, you fill them all up halfway first before finishing them off.

The very next day, this comic came out online:

Yes. The writer of XKCD made a chemistry joke just as we learned about it in class. I swear he plans this stuff...

For those of you who don't get that joke, here's one of my favorite comics from XKCD:

Comics are awesome.

College. It's the other white meat.

Whew... it's been a while since I updated. A lot of stuff has happened since I last wrote out my heart and feelings into you, dear diary... ever so long...

I'll stop that right now. Anyway, I guess the first cool thing to happen since my last post was my position on Color Guard... over two weeks ago. It's been a while. Color Guard was a fantastic experience. I got to spend some time with people from the other services, got to see firsthand how cool the Marines uniforms are, and overall had a great time. The fans were awesome, I can't tell you how many times are group was thanked and cheered during the whole process. Other than the cold, and the extreme failure of Michigan as a football team, it went off without a hitch. Being on the sidelines was awesome. I was within 5 yards of the Penn State QB (Who had the biggest arms EVER.) I was also standing less than 10 yards away from Tate Forcier when they snapped the ball into the back of the endzone. That was fun. Anyway, here are my favorite pictures of the day:

Before the Tailgate

Denard Robinson, Backup QB, and Guy I randomly see walking to Class. I got to see him and the entire football team heading into the stadium off the buses.

Air Force Guys, Just Hanging Around Before the Game

Muscles... HUGE!

Absolutely FANTASTIC picture of Joe Paterno and the Penn State Band
Tate Forcier. Freshman Quarterback. Jedi Wizard.
After that, I had the joy of discovering my camera got crunched without me noticing during the game. Luckily it's on warranty, and I'll be getting it fixed soon. I have NO idea how the screen broke, at all.

Besides Color Guard, the only other activity of note was the PFA, or Physical Fitness Assessment. Basically the whole detachment went out for an Air Force wide, twice a year test of physical fitness. It consisted of 1 minute of pushups, 1 minute of situps, and a 1.5 mile run. To hit the max-out limit, I needed 62 pushups in a minute, 55 situps in a minute, and a 9:36 run time. I got 70 pushups, 60 situps, and ran the 1.5 miles in 9:30.

Yep, I maxed out. It felt REAL good to finally do really well at something this year. I was only one of 12 or so to max out, which was pretty awesome.

Last weekend, over Halloween, I went up to Grand Rapids to visit some High School friends and go to a so called "Zombie Walk." Basically, thousands of people dressed up as zombies and walked around town. I thought it was going to be a lot of fun, but it was cold, and rather than the activity being a horde of people doing an actual walk, it consisted of Repetitive Techno music and the option to walk around the block if you wanted. We left within half an hour, and went and saw the movie "Zombieland" instead. That ended up being very good, as it was a nice action/comedy movie that was perfect for Halloween.

And now, I'm back at the grind. I have another exam in a week and a half, or so which I'll start studying for tomorrow, and I have an otherwise busy week ahead of me.

I'll keep you all updated! And hopefully starting posting more often! Potentially even with stuff that's not just a recap of "A day in the life of Paul..."

Have a great week, and an excellent National Novel Writing Month! You can expect me to at least put out an attempt, what with my obsession with these darned science fiction novels.

Stuff and Stuff

2 quick things. One, I got my chem test back, with a 72 on it. The median out of the entire class was a 72. I am the epitome of average. Bow before my mediocrity!

Yay me...

On much, much happier note, football game today! Watch it! Look for the people raising the flag! Or just watch it because it's Michigan's chance to turn their season around! Go Blue! But not Penn State Blue! Hurray!

Friday, October 23, 2009

Turn on Your TVs tomorrow!

If you happen to turn on the Michigan vs. Penn State and they show the flag being raised... look at the Color Guard for the guy in the row on the left (away from press box) nearest to the people raising the flag.

That'll be me.

Stuff to talk about

Well, there's quite a bit to mention in today's update. We'll start with last Friday. Originally, I had planned to finish up my classes and head home for Homecoming, which also coincided nicely with having Monday and Tuesday off this week for a 'fall break.' This would let me go to my homecoming game Friday night. Then I got the joyful news of an Engineering exam that day, and even better, it was at 6. I'd be getting done after the game started. Luckily for me, my professor offered an earlier time for people with conflicts, and I gleefully took my test at two. Compared to my Calc exam, I thought that went much, much better. I'll have a grade by next Monday on it.

Next up was my Fall Break. I spent a nice homecoming game, and the following day after with friends, as I decided to come back to the homecoming dance. It was nice seeing a bunch of people I haven't seen in a couple of months. Sunday I hung out with Mike and my friend Steve, where we did our traditional Heroscape, Board Game, and Video Game day/night. That was highly enjoyable as well.

And finally, today. I had the wonderful pleasure of a Chemistry exam on the day I got back to school (today.) I have spent the last 3 days studying for this beast of an exam, but I think it went pretty well. It was multiple choice, and set up to be scanned in, so no random points off for work like in math. I think with the added bonus of guess and check, I did quite well on it, or so I hope.

Well, that's been my week. For a final post, I just wanted to bring up something that has been in the News recently.

/begin rant

I'm sure by now you've heard of Barack Obama getting the Nobel Peace Prize. Now, I was a little surprised and mildly ticked off when I heard, as I didn't really think he deserved it. However, with some new information and debating that I've been party to, I've come to accept that it was generally a good thing. Sure, there were politics involved, but I'm sure Barack Obama didn't go out and apply for this. Basically, from what I've heard, he was just as surprised as we were. If that's true, then he made the correct choice. It's not like he could have refused it... that would only tick off the Nobel Prize committee, and all the European countries he spent the first 100 days of office smoothing the feathers of, because of residual Bush-hate in many of these countries. By accepting the award, he appeases the various countries over there, and has something to use as a bit of clout should he attempt further Foreign Policy... things. Not sure of the word there. Essentially, from what I've heard, most Peace Prize awards were given well before the winners accomplished anything. Martin Luther King would be an example of this, as he won his before his passage of the Equal rights act.

Now I'm not saying that Obama is anywhere close to Martin Luther King, nor am I saying he particularly deserves. I just now see why the committie gave it to him, and why he made the right choice by accepting the award (he also gave the money to charities, if that accounts.) Plus I think he deserves it more than Al Gore did...

Sorry for bothering you all with my politics, but I just wanted to point this out, because I thought it was interesting. After hearing people's arguments, I flipped 90 degrees on my support of the award's existence. It doesn't raise my opinion of the Prize Committee any, but hey, they're not my problem.

Calc Exam 1

Got a 48/100, uncurved on my exam.

Yeah. It doesn't feel too good.

My brain... is like a bowl of pudding.

*SPLORT*

That's the sound pudding makes when it gets poked.

Aside from that discovery of the day, here's Paul news! All Paul, All the time.

Two things of note recently... one was FTX, my ROTC trip to Alpena, and the other was my Calc Exam that took place an hour and a half ago. Let's... do the Calc first so we end on a good note, shall we?

I studied hard for the last couple days, writing a notecard to use during the test, and summarizing the chapters the exam was on. I was feeling pretty good about myself, because I was working through the problems decently on the practice exams, and I felt like I understood the concepts.

Until today...

The test I just took was a Math test on steroids, protein shakes, and LSD. None of that means anything, I just felt like comparing it to things that make it sound ridiculous. Essentially the test WAS the basic concepts I learned, but worded so difficultly, that my brain overthought things, made me work too hard, made me forget simple formulas until minutes later... essentially it ate a bit of my soul. Or so it feels like. Out of the 9 problems on the test, I did not finish 2-3 of them because I ran out of time. I ATTEMPTEd all of them but... ran out of time. Time time time. And here I text Mike after the test where he is, and he's already back in the room playing Computer games. O.o <-- Picture that as a face I would make. I sincerely doubt he did any better on the test than me, even if he did get the concepts better. There's no way to finish that test that quickly, accurately. We'll see when the scores come out. Luckily the grading is strongly in my favor... some of the past exams had 60s being Bs. I'm thinking that if all the parts I actually answered were fullycorrect, I'm gonna get very low 80s. It was that bad. I don't even think studying would have helped me more here, it was just time that got me. *sighs*

On to a happier note though, my previous weekend. FTX! Field... Training Exercise... Or something like that. Basically, we went up late Friday night, stayed through Saturday, and left at 5am Sunday morning. However, being the military, we went to bed at 9-10 both nights, so we got enough sleep. Basically, Saturday, we woke up at 630 and were marching by 7. First item of the day was a briefing on M16s. We learned how to take them apart, some basic safety issues... we spent about an hour or so on that. From there we split up, and my group moved to the MOUT course.

MOUT stands for Military Operations in Urban Terrain. Basically, they taught us how to clear buildings, cross streets, and the like in Urban Terrain. It wasn't too in depth, but it was fun, and once we had the basics down, we ran through three scenarios. Our group was split up into three squads of five. On the first scenario, our objective was to raid a building and capture a 'terrorist' for interrogation. My group was the actual infiltration squad. I was on point. We went into the building with our only 'intel' being that someone on the first floor most likely had a weapon. I went into the building, and we cleared the first room pretty quickly. I moved in, weapon up (These were airsoft rifles by the way, replica M16s that shot small plastic pellets on Semiautomatic or automatic. Officers got to use automatic. Guess what we used?) I rounded a corner, and there was a terrorist, I pointed my weapon at him, and he started asking questions and the like, asking what I was doing, why I was here, trying to convince me to lower my guard. Eventually my squad subdued him, then went upstairs and captured the terrorist. We cleared out that scenario in less than ten minutes, without a shot fired. It wasn't till after I found out the guy I had found HAD a rifle, he just didn't grab it because I had him in my sights. Nice ego boost there. Second scenario was similar, but with actual hostiles. There was a helicopter crash with two pilots. We were supposed to retrieve them. We found one, then had to clear out a building to find the other. That also went really well, but we had one casualty because my squad leader stood directly in front of an open window. I shut it after he 'died' so no one else would. Smart thinking, am I right? The third scenario was the worst for us. Basically, there were lots of hostiles, and we had to evacuate to a building, clear it, and hold out for 15 minutes. Little did we know that EVERY SINGLE ONE of the officers was in there. We got slaughtered. I was on cover duty outside, waiting to get the ok to move in, when I get drilled in my facemask. Dead. We fell to pieces, I don't even think anyone made it to the second floor. We were told after that if that was a real mission, the Army would use a whole BATTALION to secure tha area, then send in Special Forces, if they wanted the building. Otherwise they'd just airstrike it. Us, with semiautomatic rifles and no grenades, didn't stand a chance. The 4th scenario was just for fun, cadets vs. officers. I was one of the survivors. It was fun.

From MOUT, we ate MREs (Yum...?) then went to the shooting range. I'm purposely NOT talking about the MREs because we weren't allowed to heat them up, and they weren't too pleasant. In the shooting, range, we shot stuff. First time shooting a rifle for me... needless to say I didn't do all that well. Well, I did DECENT but... not enough to qualify for Expert. I was in the middle-low range of our group, with 27 out of 40 hits. The people who hit 35 got to shoot a 50 cal. sniper rifle. It was RIDICULOUS. Shockwave, cloud of dust... Several inch long used shells... sheesh.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun. Totally worth it. Now though, I need to eat thsi sandwich that has been sitting here for the last 20 minutes while I typed. Bye!

Hectic Morning

Well, today's the day I leave for FTX (Don't ask me what the acronym means, I couldn't tell you.) Basically we're heading up today (ROTC) at 3ish and getting to Alpena around 10ish. We'll spend Saturday doing various PT things, Urban Warfare with Airsoft guns, and attempting to get our M16 qualifications. Gonna be a blast.

Anyway, though I'd post before I left because it's been almost a week now... and I figured I should let you all know how things have been going.

Basically, this week has been cramming in as much homework as possible to try and clear enough time to study for my Math exam. It hasn't been too effective so far. I'll be bringing some math stuff for the long car ride up North...

As for the title of this post, I did indeed have a hectic morning this morning. I got up at 630 or so, packed my stuff, and left for mornign PT (I usually go in the afternoon.) I had Chemistry immediately after, so I brought my book bag. As soon as I closed the door, I realized I had left my room key and ID in the room. I shrugged, and went to PT. When I was done, I went to Chemistry, onyl to realize I left the USB device with our groups Presentation on it in my dorm room. I told my teacher, and sprinted back to Markley, where I realized I didn't have my ID to get in the building, or my room key to get in my room. Several bits of help later, I was springting back to class, just in time to find out I didn't have my pre-lab done, it wasn't in my book. (Luckily it was, I found it later.)

It all turned out well, I just ended up getting a good run in AFTER PT was done...

Bye all! Talk to you after FTX!

Pictures from Dine-In

Realized I forgot these... here's the few pictures I took at the military dinner I went to yesterday.

Before that though, here's a quick summary of the night.

It was pretty cool. Met with the ROTC people who go to MSU and surrounding colleges (Just like Michigan includes Eastern and some others) Started with a meet and greet, followed by dinner. Dinner was interesting, because during the whole affair, peopel called each other out for breaking' 'rules' of the mess, so as to send people to the Grog bowl, which basically was a bunch of random stuff mixed so as to be disgusting. The trick was, you had to speak in rhyme. It was pretty funny. Someone would call you out, and you'd respond back, and then they might get one more, then the President of the Mess would decide who goes to the Grog, or both. I didn't get sent, but I had a rebuttal ready, and I was going to get my friend Schroeder, but I ran out of time. Dinner was pretty good. Salad and Bread, Followed by a steak dish with vegetables and rice, and some sort of... custardy dessert. After food, we had a Colonel speak about his job for a while, then we were done.

Here are the pics!

At the meet and greet before dinner.

Me and Cadet Kouroupas, another of my friends from ROTC. (He's huge!)

Here's me with a bunch of people during meet and greet. I'm the one blocked by Cadet Ford's gigantic head...

Another group of Cadets. The guy in the suit is from MSU, then from left to right it's Cadet Hildebrandt, Guy whose name I forget, Gannon, then me sneaking in from the right.

This particularly blurry picture includes myself on the left (would be my best one of me, but it's blurry...) but also happens to include some of the 2nd Year Cadets. (In the front, looking silly.)

And that there is Colonel Mattson (Madison? Matson? *shrugs* ) Deputy Commander of the 732nd Air Expeditionary Wing. I think. It was late when he speaking.

And that's all folks!

So Very, Very Sad

For those of you watch the obscure North American Sport of Football, particularly in the Midwestern Region of the Continent, surely you have heard by now of Michigan's loss to Michigan State. In Overtime. After driving 90 yards down the field to tie it moments before.

[Sounds of frustration echo through the internet]

Anyways besides that wonderful game, life has been going pretty well. Exams are beginning to peek around the corner with their beady, beady eyes, and preparations are beginning ever so slowly. At least I have no major projects this week to do. For now at least, I hope to enjoy a small bit of free time.

Happy Saturday everyone!

On a dark, and lonely night...

Well, it's been a long week or so. Let's have a bit of a synopsis shall we...?

Classes have been going well. I'm still acclimating to the larger amount of work, and I'm doing better and keeping up with my homework (or so it seems.) My next project is to go and rewrite my notes from all my classes properly so I can pass my exams. I'm a tad disorganized right now. Once that's done though, I should have an effective system. Another good school tactic I learned was the discovery of Coffee on morning where I have 8:00 lectures. Other caffeine such as Mountain didn't seem to cut it, but Coffee kepy my mind clear and unfoggy this morning, rather than sleeping through half of class. It was nice, especially now that my Engineering class is actually building something.

Heading over to ROTC, everything is still going well. I'm getting better at the various protocol and drill, and I'm really enjoying my experience. Last Friday we had something called Warrior Spirit where the POC (Professional Office Course) put us through an intense inspection then sent us ona bit of PT and group building under slightly more stress than usual. It was a learning experience, and I guess I can say I enjoyed it. This Friday, I have what's called a Dine-In with the rest of the Detachment. I finally will get the rest of my uniform, and we'll go as a group to a hall near MSU to meet with their cadets and have a dinner-type-thing. I'm not too sure what that will entail.

That leads into my only complaint for the week. As some of you may know, this Saturday is the Michigan vs. MSU football game. It starts at 12:00, as does the tailgate with the rest of my ROTC group. It sounded like fun. Yes, sounded. I used the past tense, because I will not be attending. You see, my genius professor for Engineering 100 scheduled the Balloon Competition/Presentation on Saturday. At 12:00. His response when I asked him about it?

"You're engineering students."

[Insert Swear Word of Choice.]

Anyway, besides that, everything has been going pretty well. G'Night all!

[Silence]

No blog is heard today, only the sound of a shovel digging through piles of homework.

Happy Birthday! To me!

Well, thanks everyone who has called me so far (and who have yet to call!) and to my friends and my family who visited for the weekend. It was pretty fantastic.

Anyway, after thoroughly enjoying the weekend, I'm about to dig back into to homework. Before I do so, I'm playing with my schwanky (fancy) new digital camera. Thusly, I present.... my Dorm Room!

With classic... wood.... furniture, It is truly a cozy place at 11 ft by 12 ft! (Just ignore the pile of birthday cards on the floor...)

Here's my side of the room, resplendent with a TV, fridge, and desk conveniently stocked with books just MADE for learning! (Along with this very laptop!)

Here's my closet! That's... about it here.

Oh, and this is Mike. Hard at work, he ponders some deep problem that the rest of us may never understand. Bravo Mike. Bravo.

And that's all folks! Expect some pictures occasionally now that I have my very own camera! Until then, G'Night!

Tired... Hungry... Brains...

I feel like a zombie. Minus the eating brains part of course.

It's not all the time, but last two days I came down with a cold of some sort. That combined with me catching up on homework and it coinciding with an 8:00 class day+PT day... I'm feeling kind of... bleh. And yes mom, I am making sure I get enough sleep.

Got some auditions tonight for an Improv group... or two. At the same time. Should be fun.

Now for some headlines from this comedy newspaper I found...

"Amateur crastinator turns pro."
"Blue goes."
"UM welcomes record large freshman class in anticipation of Heavy Swine Flu losses."
"Study shows you won't read past this emboldened headline."
"Students from same Michigan town meet at party, talk about hometown."

And more!

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!

Had a nice afternoon with ROTC today. We went to a field on South campus and had pizza and messed around with some touch football and volleyball. It was nice to not have to deal with all the 'Yes sir' 'No sir' and all that fun stuff.

Anyway, wanted to post tonight, because my Flight (Equivalent of a Squad) Commander Mr. Luckey sent us this link as 'motivation' for PT tomorrow.

Yup. Makes me want to go run right now!

Weird Dreams...

So. Whether it was from the excitement last night or something was wrong with the pizza, I had an incredibly vivid and somewhat odd dream last night.

Somehow, I was back in Bay City at a party. Two things wrong with that. One, I'm in Ann Arbor, and two, I don't do the whole... "party" scene. Somehow my brain still thought it was real so far.

I find myself heading home, then somehow stopping on the side of the road, sitting on Adirondack chairs with a couple other guys who are drinking. A moment later, I take a sip of what I assume must be beer. The weird part was, I turned to the guy next to me and asked, "When did I get a beer?" Not gettin a satisfactory answer, I suppose I kept drinking.

After that, I was driving (Yes, driving!) home, drunk. Having never been drunk, I have no idea what that's like, but my brain did a pretty good approximation of it, I think. It kept thinking in circles, I couldn't remember anything.... I can't remember anything specific, but It was decidedly creepy.

The dream ended on an even weirder note, because I thought of my ROTC and went "Oh crap, I just broke the rules didn't I?" Then I lay down to sleep and worried about a hangover in the morning.

At THAT point, the weirdness continued. It felt like I was slowly sliding out of reality, and my bed changed underneath me. I opened my eyes, and found myself in my dorm room. Only THEN did I realize it had all been a dream.

I still have no idea where this came from.

Adventure!

So... tonight. It was fun, I suppose, if you REALLY like walking. Mike and I went to a mass meeting for a comedy group, then proceeded to explore downtown. He'll blame me but... I hadn't been walking all of downtown before. It SOUNDED like a good idea...

Anyway, here's the route we took. It's a rough draft, and the first half actually went to the Michigan Union on State St. first.

The time on that walk is about right, by the way. Owie.

TGIF... even if it's only 12:39 a.m

Well, it's been an interesting first couple of days here at the University of Michigan. I've already had bits of homework thrown at me, had Calculus I understood in high school twisted into misunderstanding, and missed lunch today. A summary ensues.

So, Tuesday rolls around with my first day of classes. I check my E-mail only to find that my Engineering 100 class has scheduled a special class at 5:30 that night. Joyful Day! There goes normal dinner time. Anyway, when class finally ends, the teachers decide to give us a little homework. A 2 page essay due during the next lecture. Which happens to be... 8:00 am the next morning.

There went my night. Got it finished though.

As for the Calculus, well the teacher has a strong Mexican accent and takes stuff I thought I knew, and somehow makes it hard. Oh well. Practice makes perfect. At least I have all weekend to finish the work.

Chemistry has also been easy so far, though I have my first date in-lab tomorrow/this morning. We'll see hwo that goes. What's been fun about Calc and Chem so far is that both have discovered the joys of online homework. It may seem like you're getting nothing in class but... then it ambushes you. Bam. A lot of stuff is hidden online now that I have to dig for. It's certainly useful, but also a bit annoying.

And finally, missing lunch. I had a Calc class this morning 11:30 till one. Breakfast (A granola bar and juice) was at 10:30. After class finished, I wandered the joy that was Festifall, a mass of every single student group on Campus that filled (and more!) the whole Diag. From guys with signs saying "Talk to me about Socialism!" to the group that ha a pile of medieval weapons on the table, they had everything. (Did you know a crossbow bolt can punch through CARS? Plural!) Anyway, that led into a 2:30 ROTC class which kept me busy till 6:30, followed by a MANDATORY Sexual Assault thing that lasted an hour. My stomach was unhappy, especially when it was told to leave the dining hall mid dinner because it was closing. (At 8 o' clock.) *sigh*

Anyway, it's late, and I should be sleeping, but I'd have to climb into bed... that's work. Ciao for now!

Updating...

Well, I've been a bit busy the last couple days, but here's the rundown.

My last post was Tuesday the 1st. Since then I've completed my ROTC Orientation, visited the Crittendens with my parents, and relaxed at home for two days to grab a few more things and hang out with a few friends before I head off again to college.

ROTC Orientation went well. Day 1 consisted of some basic briefings, designed mainly to instill some of the necessary protocols in us cadets. Basically, I learned that every time I see another military member I'm supposed to greet them based on time of day, and that I'm going to be saying "Sir" a lot. Nothing too weird. Also on that day I took the AFOQT (Air Force Officer Qualifying Test.) Four hours long, it wasn't too hard, but it certainly wasn't a walk in the park. It was like the ACT but tested quick thinking as well as regular knowledge. We ended Orientation for the day with some basic drilling on standing at attention, saluting, and the like.

Adding to the adventures of Wednesday, boredom led me to leave my room with a few guys from my hall. We'd reached the other end of central campus before meeting up with a guy who was also apparently from our hall who was heading to a frat party. I was bored, and figured such a party might be interesting provided I avoided the prodigious amounts of alcohol in the are. Luckily for me, the place I went to was not having a party and what I got instead was a tour of a 4-story mansion. Biggest frat house I've ever seen. Strongest scent of alcohol and stickiest floor I've ever experienced as well. Was an interesting experience though.

Thursday was similar to Wednesday, albeit I replaced the 4-hour test with several other information briefings and some team-building/leadership type activities. We drilled a bit more, then marched as a group to the Arboretum where, in a large field, we enjoyed yet more team-building activities designed to make us think a bit. It was pretty fun, and we marched back and finished out the day pretty simply.

Thursday night was much less exciting, the high point being me wandering the Cemetery near our dorm to pass the time. We got a bit lost.

Friday was... interesting. Getting up at 7:30, we went straight into a Warrior run. We ran, did some pushups and situps, ran, did a stair run that combined with leg exercises, and then ran some more. Maybe a mile and a half total. Good news is, it was fairly easy, though my legs were a bit tired. I filled out some paperwork after for my scholarship, then was officially sworn in to the Air Force. You may now call me "Cadet." It's my official title, and my pay grade is E-1. Yes, I'm getting paid. We ended the day meeting the Crittendens, and a few other friends of my parents. I might have enjoyed it more if I didn't sleep for small pieces of it several times throughout the night. I was pretty darn tired.

And thus, my first week at Michigan ended. I'll be heading up tomorrow to help Mike move in, and then classes will begin the day after.

HOO-A!

Operation Move-In: Complete

At 1200 hours, a crack squadron of a student, his parents, and his roommate-in-arms proceeded to take control of Reeves Room 4216. Operations were successfully completed, with the unloading of important material successful.

Alright, enough of that. Today I moved in to my room with the help of my parents and my roommate, Mike. After some basic setup and some distribution of (heavy) furniture, it was done. We wandered the town a bit after that, picked up some Jimmy John's... you know the deal. My parents left midafternoon, and since I've been hanging out with people from my hallway.

There is a surprising amount of engineers here, although a few others have said to be from LSA, either Political science or undecided. All in all, a nice group of guys. We somehow snagged the private dining room at the Hill Dining Center, where I ate enough food for a family of four. Since then, I've been having fun trying to get the internet up and running.

This is Agent Paul, reporting in. If you'll excuse me, We have to go beat 3rd Reeves in a game of Ultimate Frisbee.

Ciao.

The Story of Paul

Hello Family! Many of you have expressed interest in keeping up with my status at college, and while I can certainly promise to call you all every week and tell you how I'm doing, I can guarantee right now I will forget within 3 days. So! Without further ado, I prevent this online Journal-type thing where I'll be posting important events, achievements, thoughts, and other stuff that I deem important. (Don't be surprised If I post a funny Youtube video, distraction is a invincible beast.)

As of today, I am sitting at home, about to leave for dinner. In exactly... a week or so, I'll be leaving for college. I have so much stuff already it's unbelievable. I swear, once I get a job I'm hiring a personal planner. And housekeeper.

I hope I get rich.

In conclusion, I'm not going to necessarily guarantee daily posts, I will certainly attempt to. And if you really want a phone call, well, let's hope I remember things.

G'Day Mates.
